1978年、キンクスのカヴァー“ユー・リアリー・ガット・ミー”で衝撃的なデビューを飾ったヴァンヘイレンは同年、デビュー・アルバム 炎の導火線を発表。エディのライト・ハンド奏法など、彼のギター・プレイが注目を集める中、アルバムは150万枚のセールスを記録。ヴァンヘイレンは一気に人気者となった。翌1979年セカンド・アルバム伝説の爆撃機を発表。この後の長期に渡る全米ツアーでより評価を高めた。
リーダー兼ギタリストのエドワード・ヴァン・ヘイレンはその後のロックミュージックに多大な影響を与えた非常にテクニカルなギター奏法であるタッピング（日本でのみ「ライトハンド奏法」と呼ばれたらしくて、よくやる右手でフレット上をタップして音を出すテクニックのことです）を広く普及させた事でも知られる。
