米マサチューセッツ州出身のロック・バンド。メンバーはJ・マスキス（g,vo）、ルー・バーロウ（b）、マーフ（ds）の3名。1984年と何と38年前に結成された古株。、翌年にデビュー。
アメリカのオルタナティブロックバンド。ノイジーなギターサウンドとポップなメロディに乗せた気だるいヴォーカルを特徴とする音楽性により、1990年代のグランジ・オルタナティブブームの中で人気を得た。
91年の『グリーン・マインド』が大ヒットし、世界的なバンドとしてニルヴァーナらとシーンを牽引した。
97年の解散までアルバム7枚を発表。2005年に再結成し、その後『ビヨンド』『ファーム』『アイ・ベッド・オン・スカイ』とコンスタントに作品を発表。
来日も数多く果たし、高い人気を博している。2016年に約4年ぶりのアルバム『ギヴ・ア・グリンプス・オヴ・ホワット・ヤー・ノット』をリリース。
